The written word has allowed us to document history, our thoughts and feelings or send messages through the ages. While we may have started with pictures to convey what we wanted to say, we’ve since moved on to typography that has adapted to reflect the times, the meaning and the format it’s used in.

Throwback to B.C times and you’ll learn of messages painted or etched into stone in caves and places where people lived and worked. It’s believed that formal writing actually originated around 3,500 B.C and was created by the Sumerians in Mesopotamia (now Iraq). They inscribed details of bills, inventories and records of births and marriages on clay tablets that stayed preserved for thousands of years before archaeologists dug them up.

The Egyptians developed this concept further, with hieroglyphics that told stories and recorded events with symbols and ideograms. The Phoenicians then went on to develop an alphabet which was adopted by the Greeks later. The Romans then adapted the written word to reflect their use of Latin – mainly used by the church or signage. The written word was shaped and changed over 100s of years by multiple societies.

Fast forward to the Middle Ages and writing had become a common form of communication. Texts are being transcribed into Old English and focus is put on presentation with neat lines of text and illustration.

The 1400s – Medieval ages – saw the introduction of moveable typefaces which significantly sped up writing but wasn’t particularly legible. In 1501, the italic typeface was born and was used to cram more words onto the page, as writing materials were costly.

Serif font was created in the 1700s and John Baskerville introduced those who could write to Transitional type. It was the preferred type for press work, as it was easy to read and set wide – so you’ll see lots of old advertisements from the time using it.

By this time, typography was relatively limited to advancements on the printing press. Writing by hand was still encouraged to be neat, with a preference for cursive or italic letters. The loops and swirls that we know best from when we try our hand at calligraphy were popular in letters and diary entries.

As time went on more and more fonts were introduced to the printing press from Copperplate Gothic and Goudy Old Style in the 1920s to Comic Sans in 1995 – one of the most hated fonts of our time. Computers became more commonplace, meaning the love for the handwritten word was lost for a little while, as we relied on Microsoft to create beautiful written texts for us.

However, this has all changed in recent years and the focus has shifted back to appreciate those who can handletter and create calligraphy style typography. Social media has seen a rise in accounts showing people how to create beautiful letters and signage has shifted back to a handwritten style. Typography has become personal again, no longer limited to machines and strict fonts.

Typography has also evolved to become more than a way of simply writing things down. Fonts and styles of writing can convey different meanings. Times New Roman is reserved for those who want to stay serious and look professional while Calibri or Arial are for everyday use. For those who want something a little different they turn to Lobster or Pacifico.

However, as well as the written word we’ve also seen a shift back to symbols again for communication. Emojis are commonplace in society and let us convey our thoughts and feelings with an image instead of writing out anything at all. The trend for infographics and visual data has seen us prefer to look at imagery to tell us what we need to know instead of lengthy texts. They say a picture is worth a thousand words – so it’s easy to understand why we may prefer them.

As technology advances, typography will too. It will be interesting to see where we go next.

Ask yourself a simple question.
Have you considered any fallback font for the web fonts you have selected?
It might happen that the fonts that you have used as a part of the typography list of your site is not present in the repertoire of fonts of the viewer. In that case, the fallback fonts, which are web safe, can always come in handy.

So, what are these fallback fonts?
They are just what their name suggests. In case the viewer can’t see the fonts you have used, the fallback font functions as a reserve typeface. It has symbols for several Unicode characters. So, if the user doesn’t have the font in his system, they are shown in the fallback font. Hence, if you don’t assign those, you might lose out on many of the readers of your web page.

Not Using Enough Space

  • Tracking
  • Leading refers to the space between the lines of the web page. There is no specific formula for how much space you should use between the lines. In fact, it depends on a lot of things, including:

  • Font size
  • Color of the font
  • Effect that you want
  • The font size needs to be selected properly. It shouldn’t be too small or too large.
    Uniform spacing between the lines always appears good. The same holds true for tracking, which refers to the space between the words in a content. The kerning or the space between the alphabets in a word should be same throughout as well.
    It is essential to use the space prudently. Because it’s an important task of the web designer to strike a balance between readability and aesthetics.

    Not Following the Right Hierarchy

    When it comes to typography, hierarchy has an extremely important part to play. In no web page, all the fonts should be of the same size. There is a simple guide to the hierarchy. The font size for the page title should be the largest. It should be followed by the headings in the body text. The sub-headings should be smaller than the heading, but larger than the body text, which should be the smallest in a web page.

    Website typography is no superficial thing. In addition to affecting branding and the aesthetics of a site, typography, according to numerous studies conducted since 1929, has a psychological effect on users, which can affect site traffic and product conversion rates.

    Return traffic, organic linking and successful calls to action are often the result of a site’s chosen type proving effective in personality, mood influence and presentation. For websites, typography can strategically convey subconscious messages, emotion, principles and ethics, in addition to literal meaning. It may seem strange or unbelievable, but research shows that people can have their moods and behaviors manipulated by the sight of certain font and icons. All this can play a role in bounce rates and length of visits on a website, depending on if the font attracts or repels.

    Choosing typography is, therefore, one of the most fateful decisions a company and its web designers can make. Typography is more than simply the style of the font. It includes font size, font color, contrast, accents such as bold or italic lettering, spacing, juxtaposition, the addition of non-traditional characters and even logos designed to be used alongside font. All these facets merge to create a visual presence for the website that has the following consequences.

    Successful companies do not change their typography on a whim. Often, the initial typography seeps into the consciousness of the market and its customers, lasting as long as the business itself. Web designers and website owners should take heed, selecting typography that is crafted to endure so that readers begin to identity with a reliable and unshifting brand. Changing typography in the midst of a popular run with visitors can be unsettling and ruin a website experience for loyalists; it can make some readers question whether they still identify with the site or get the same “feeling” from the site as they once did. In the Web world, the digital atmosphere is everything. Designers can’t provide readers or customers with physical atmosphere marked by carpet, drapery or lighting, but they can provide the illusion of atmosphere through site design and brand typography, hopefully styled with such impact that it evokes the true spirit of the company.

    Typography as Psychology


    The reason is typography works so well to create atmosphere and convey messages to readers is first and foremost because letters and characters on a page affect legibility and readability. Not all type is easy to decipher and read. If a website provokes eye strain or requires too much effort from readers, they might leave the site and associate negative feelings with that website, according to typography researcher and Microsoft psychologist Kevin Larson.
    If readers find the type pleasant, Larson believes, they might become so engaged in what they are reading that they spend more time on the website than intended. Think of what that could mean in terms of increased exposure to company products, services, articles and advertising.
    In addition to just staying on the site longer, clicking more pages and reading more, typography even affects readers after they leave, Larson found. He reported that people can walk away from a website elevated in mood or creativity and associate those positive reactions with the site. Conceivably, visiting a site daily could provide a habitual fix for a reader as strong as caffeine or as unpleasant as bitter vinegar.

    The Duty of the Web Designer to Test Typography

    Since typography can be so powerful, finding the right stylistic type can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, there’s no one formula that proves successful always — and even if there were, it would be useless because branding relies on distinctiveness not mimicry and formula. Designers wanting to be successful with typography should assemble a small group of test readers who can give feedback on any new type or original type being chosen for a web client.
